Exotic Pet Care

Are you the owner of a wonderful “exotic” pet?  Remember that some of these pets can live up to or greater than 15 years, so regular veterinary care is important for exotic pets too.  Airways Animal Clinic treats all types of exotic pets, including:

  • Birds
  • Reptiles
  • Guinea Pigs
  • Hamsters
  • Rabbits
  • Ferrets
  • Chinchillas
  • Rats
  • Mice

An Annual Exam is Necessary for Exotic Pets

All pets, including exotic pets, should have an annual examination by our experienced veterinarian. This is the best way to catch diseases early, before your pet is showing any signs of illness.  Exotic pets are masters at hiding illness, and once they are showing signs of illness they are usually very sick.  Nutritional, environmental enrichment and behavioral counseling are important parts of your exotic pet’s wellness exam.  During your pet’s exam we may also recommend additional testing, such as fecal exams, x-rays, blood tests, skin scrapings or biopsy of growths.

Dental care

Some exotic pets require dental care.  Ferrets, for example, can get the same types of dental disease as dogs or cats. We recommend starting to brush your ferret’s teeth early in life to prevent periodontal disease.  Other pets, such as rats and rabbits, need dental exams to be sure their teeth are not overgrown.

Spay/Neuter Surgery

Some non-breeding exotic pets, such as rabbits, should be spayed or neutered.  If you have a rabbit, we will discuss spaying or neutering your pet during your annual wellness exam.

Follow the Prescribed Diet for Your Particular Pet

Exotic pets have special nutritional needs.  Most exotic pets need a healthy blend of protein, fats and vegetables.  Diet is extremely important and attention is need so that your pet does not become malnutritioned.  Fresh water should be available to your pet at all times.

Is Your Pet Experiencing an Illness?

As soon as you detect that your exotic pet seems ill or does not seem “right”, please bring your pet to us as soon as possible for a thorough physical examination.  Remember that early diagnosis means we can begin treating your pet so your pet is quickly on the road to recovery.
