Congratulations on your new kitten! All of us at Airways Animal Clinic are eager to meet your new furry bundle of joy!

Congratulations on your new kitten! All of us at Airways Animal Clinic are eager to meet your new furry bundle of joy!

Call us for a kitten exam when you bring your kitten home. It is important to get your kitten on a regular kitten exam schedule to be sure that your new kitten has a good healthy start to life. Kittens that have not had adequate medical care prior to adoption may have pre-existing conditions that need to be addressed. Wellness exams are a great opportunity to speak with Dr. Harris about any questions or concerns you may have about the health and behavior of your new kitten.

Caring for Your Kitten at Home

If you have any questions about caring for your kitten at home, how to introduce your new kitten to other household cats or pets, or what to feed your kitten, please give us a call. Be sure to feed your kitten the same food the breeder/shelter was feeding your kitten until your kitten’s first visit with us.

Please take a moment to kitten-proof the area where he or she will spend most of his or her time the first few months. Kittens are inveterate snoops and their favorite toys might be harmful to them, things like electric cords, cords on blinds or plants to nibble. Take a look at your home from your kitten’s point of view so that you are able to remove items that could be a hazard to your kitten.

Please bring your kitten in a closed carrier along with all veterinary records or other paperwork you have pertaining to your kitten’s care. Also, please bring a fresh stool sample (ideally less than 12 hours old).

At Airways Animal Clinic, Your kitten’s first exam will include:

  • A comprehensive physical exam
  • Screening for viruses specific to felines, such as Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus
  • Intestinal parasite screening
  • Intestinal parasite deworming if necessary
  • Development of an immunization program based on your kitten’s current age and expected lifestyle
  • Recommendations for controlling and preventing external parasites such as fleas
  • Behavior and housetraining recommendations
  • Nutritional counseling

Call us today with any questions or concerns regarding your kitten, or to schedule an appointment with us!
