Good dental care is a very important component of your pet’s overall health. Just like humans, dogs and cats can develop and accumulate plaque and tartar build-up on their teeth. Left untreated, plaque can cause pain, gum disease and tooth loss. Over time, it can lead to more serious health issues for your pet and can even compromise the quality of life of your pet. Dental disease is one of the most common problems we see at Airways Animal Clinic.

Good Dental Care for your Pet Begins with Professional Dental Cleanings

During your pet’s wellness exam, we will give your pet a visual dental exam.  We may recommend a preventative dental care routine for your pet that includes a professional cleaning performed by our highly trained staff.  While basic visual oral examinations can be performed while your pet is awake, short-term anesthetic must be administered to perform a comprehensive tooth and gum examination and professional cleaning.

Professional Dental Care at Airways Animal Clinic Includes:

  • Examination of your pet’s teeth, gums and mouth for periodontal disease, mobility, fractures, and malocclusions.
  • Removal of plaque and tartar using modern and safe ultrasonic cleaning equipment to remove plaque above and below your pet’s gum line.
  • Polishing your pet’s teeth to create a smooth tooth surface that is more resistant to plaque buildup.
  • A  chlorhexidine and zinc treatment to help prevent the recurrence of tartar buildup.

Monitoring and Safe Anesthesia

At Airways Animal Clinic, we utilize the safest anesthetic options available and provide the same safe anesthesia monitoring techniques for dental procedures that we use in all of our surgeries. Before beginning the cleaning, we recommend a physical exam and blood tests (CBC and Chemistry) to ensure that your dog or cat is a good candidate for anesthesia.  Pets are monitored closely during dental cleaning.  We will ensure your pet has minimal pain before, during and after their dental procedure by administering medications to control pain until your pet is fully recovered from the dental procedure.

Signs of Dental Disease in Your Pet

Good dental care includes recognizing the signs of oral and dental disease in your pet.   It is important to watch for symptoms that may indicate an underlying dental infection or condition such as:

  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding from the mouth
  • Drooling or dropping food from the mouth
  • Loose teeth or teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
  • Loss of appetite or loss of weight

At-Home Dental Care

At-home dental care is a highly effective way of preventing plaque and tartar from building up on your dog and cat’s teeth. When you brush your dog or cat’s teeth at home, make sure that you are using pet tooth paste and a pet tooth brush. It will be helpful to your dog or cat if you brush their teeth every day at the same time.

If you are having problems brushing your pet’s teeth at home, call our office today and one of our friendly staff members will give you tips on proper at-home dental care.
