Senior Dog Care

Dogs have a very different aging process than humans—they age much faster than we do. Generally speaking—depending on the size and breed—larger dogs are considered to be “senior” at five years, medium dogs at seven years, and small dogs nine years. This means your senior dog may experience dramatic changes in their health in as little as three months! This is why we recommend semi-annual wellness exams for senior dogs.

Once your dog has reached their senior age, you will begin to notice health changes that will affect their mobility, comfort, and overall health. At Airways Animal Clinic, our staff is committed to helping both you and your dog through this process. During your senior dog’s semi-annual wellness exam, please discuss with us any observed changes in your dog while at home and any behavior changes you may have noticed.

The senior dog semi-annual wellness exams at Airways Animal Clinic include:

  • An in-depth senior wellness exam, including a dental evaluation
  • As needed, additional  diagnostic testing that may include a senior dog blood profile analysis (blood count and blood chemistry panel)
  • Urine and fecal analysis
  • Vaccinations, parasite protection, heartworm testing and prevention
  • Nutrition and diet counseling
  • Behavioral evaluation and counseling

In addition to the care we provide for your pet at Airways Animal Clinic, there are measures you can take at home to keep your dog healthy and free of age-related health conditions. A balanced diet and regular play and exercise are important steps to keep your pet happy and healthy.  Diet and Exercise will help your senior dog maintain their ideal weight and delay the onset of chronic conditions such as arthritis and diabetes.

Aging signs to watch for in your senior dog:

  • Abnormal stools
  • A lump or growth
  • Weight loss
  • Increase/decrease in appetite
  • Increased water intake
  • Excess urination
  • Abnormal stool or irregular bowel movements
  • Vomiting
  • Changes in hair coat quality
  • Decreased activity level, trouble walking, slow to rise
  • Heavy or rapid breathing at rest
  • Depression or listless behavior
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Signs of pain in movement or handing
  • Wheezing and coughing

We are here to help you and your family dog through every life stage. Please contact us today to schedule a senior wellness exam for your dog and to ask us any age-related questions you may have.
